New Jersey Tree Recovery Campaign Provides Free Tree Seedlings for pick-up in South River

SOUTH RIVER, N.J. – Free tree seedlings will be available to New Jersey residents at two locations in the borough as part of the New Jersey Tree Recovery Campaign. This program helps communities replace trees damaged or destroyed by Superstorm Sandy. The seedling distribution will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, May 4, 2019 at: ● South River Community Garden, 39 Causeway Street, and ● South River Human Resources Building, 55 Reid Street. Residents will be able to pick up five tree seedlings on a first come, first served basis.  Each resident also will receive instructions on how to store, care for, and plant the seedlings as well as guidelines for choosing the right place on a property to plant a tree while keeping in mind the tree’s full-grown size in the future. Residents should plant the seedlings within two days after pick-up in order to prevent the roots from drying out. There is no Green Team Committee this month due to lack of quorum.  The next meeting is tentatively scheduled for Wednesday, March 20, 2019 at 7 p.m.  The location will be the Conference Room at the Municipal Building, 48 Washington Street.

GREEN TEAM GOALS

Below are some goals discussed last year by the Green Team Committee and subcommittees. If there are questions, suggestions, etc. please feel free to reply below. A document incorporating all the responses will be prepared so the full Green Team and subcommittees can decide which items are good for 2019 or no longer feasible. Each of the subcommittees will also work on Sustainable Jersey certification items in their respective subject areas. If you're reading this and sustainability in South River concerns you, then we want your input. ("River Advocacy" and "Transparency and Open Government" subcommittees get retired once their work is complete, unless there are more things they should be tasked with. The Green Team Committee's Transparency and Open Government Task Force will hold a worksession meeting Saturday, Jan. 26, 2019, immediately following the regular Green Team Committee meeting that begins at 12:30 p.m.   The meeting will be held at the Municipal Building, 48 Washington Street.  A portion of the meeting will be open to public comment.  The public is invited to attend.

Sustainability Leaders

At our last meeting, the Green Team Committee recognized four persons as Sustainability Leaders in the Borough for 2018. We want to spotlight those who go above and beyond in being conscious movers of change toward a better and more sustainable community. Recognized by resolution are:  Denise Batista, Green Team member and Community Garden Leader; Jack Layne, Borough Administrator (who resigned effective Dec. 31, 2018); Donna Stoddard, the borough's Recycling and Clean Communities Coordinator; and Eliana Neyra, Environmental Commission and Shade Tree Advisory Board member. Congratulations to everyone!  And Happy New Year!!
